When Daniel Johnston played this in Glasgow last night I started crying (maybe I related to it in some way, on top of feeling sorry for him). He said that as he was walking out to the post box he’d overheard a friend of his mum’s saying to her that “you know Danny’s music will never get him anywhere”.. then he heard the melody on an advert they were watching and wrote this song in his head on the way out to the post box.

He proved them wrong (apparently he’s now a “half-millionaire”) but he’s suffered - he is obviously not a well man, and was shaking throughout the gig. But his voice remains true and genuinely moving, and his lyrics veer between heartbreakingly honest and knowingly amusing.

After a short solo set he was joined on stage at the Old Fruitmarket by Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Scout Niblett, James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair of Half Japanese, and they also did short solo sets in support.
